Well, I had predicted there would be a lot to read and I was right. We always have to read long articles for our classes.
When I was reading the first
http://iteslj.org/Techniques/Krajka-WritingUsingNet.html
and the second one,
http://iteslj.org/Lessons/Liang-ExtensiveReading.html
I was trying to visualize my classroom and my students in it. I also tried to connect the first article to the other and my real world of teaching and this is when a number of questions started to come to my mind.
The most important question was whether the articles give any practical solutions or suggest ways of dealing with problems and how technology can solve them. I tried to clarify this and came to the conclusion that the Liang's article seems to be a perfect solution for your lessons if you have a class full of so called "bookworms", who love spending all or most of their free time reading books. If , however, your class is full of "party animals", it's a flop.
The Krajka's article, on the other hand, proposes a bunch of broader in context solutions, discusses the benefits of different types of activities, the role of the teacher in the wired classroom, the resources needed as well as considers if and how to incorporate it into the curriculum. If I had to evaluate both , I'd have to admit that the Krajka's article gives a better perspective on what technology can offer for the classroom and thus would get my vote.
Dearest Alickja,
ReplyDeleteYour blogs fascinate me. I get lots of wonderful ideas from you and learn from it too. Thank you very much. Now I am animated by your post. Funny as they may seem, the meaning they project though is more than what the eyes can see and the mind can comprehend.
On the other hand, I agree with your thoughts on Liangs study and in some ways with that of Krajka's giving a better perspective on what technology can be used for in the classroom. But if you go over, the cited references below the study, you will find that most of the things that were mentioned in the study were also in those studies that I thought it redundant (K's article). Please correct me if I am wrong.
I guess I need to install more software into my brains to fully comprehend and to highly maximize the plethora of ideas and technology enhanced teaching strategies we get from webskills. Join my guffaw please.
Xoxo,
Sonia
Hello Again Alickja,

Hello, Alicja
ReplyDeleteYour post is really nice and the cartoons give a funny and clear support to your ideas and comments. I agree with you when you mentioned the role of a teacher in a wired classroom. In fact, A teacher has to be skillful enough to look for useful resources on the internet and also write a detailed lesson plan to reach his/her goal. It is also important to have a "backup" activity in case of technology failure.
I want to share with you this article about your project proposal, it would be an excellent idea to create a students & teachers' online community for ESL/EFL support... in this link there are some tips you might be interested in.

Dear Sonia,
ReplyDeletethank you for your sweet comments! Please, let me apologize for this late response but the last two days have been immensely hectic - no time for anything! I agree with you on Krajka's reading completely. I found this first part really boring because all he did was just quoting other authors without even trying to provide his own interpretation or at least analysis. In this respect, Liang's article was a better reading. Yet, my general impression of the things I could learn was in his favor and this is why I voted for him.
It's so much fun to create and discover things. I believe both can be equally invigorating. I'm glad we keep inspiring one another in this way.
Hugs to you,
Alicja
